The History of Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day has been an American tradition since the 1700's, but has been a tradition in European cultures since the 18th century. The day is named after the patron saint, St. Valentine, but there are several legends around who he actually was. One of the most popular is as a priest in ancient Rome during the 3rd century AD, who defied the will of emperor Claudius II, that young men could not marry, so they could serve in his army and be better soldiers.

Another popular legend is that St. Valentine actually sent the first "Valentine" himself while in prison, where he fell in love with the jailor's daughter. He wrote a letter to her, signed "From Your Valentine." Today there are over a billion Valentine cards sent each year to sweethearts all over the world.

New Years Resolution Help

  • Make it simple - Don't over do the size or complexity of your resolution. You will have a much better chance of achieving your goal if you make your resolution something that's challenging, but achievable.
  • Write it down - When you write your plan or goals down, then you have less chance of forgetting what you were actually going to do when you thought of your resolution in the first place. Create clear steps that can be put into action.
  • Be Flexible - Just because you slip a little does not mean you have failed. Keep trying and don't quit. If you need to change your plan, then do it, but don't give up trying to achieve your goal(s).
  • Exercise - No matter what your goal(s) is, exercise can help you focus and get you into the mood to get things done. Even if it's just a daily walk or stroll, that exercise can have an amazing effect on your overall health and state of mind.
  • Tell EVERYONE - Believe it or not, your friends can help you by just telling them what your resolution / goal is for the year. Don't be afraid of letting your friends help you. They can help keep you motivated.
